MtW Marisa Klaster

Sparked by stories, that’s where I start. An intriguing design commission, working together with fellow makers or just by looking closely at the world around. Being an art director for many years I told big stories through design. Now, as a product designer and maker, the same aesthetic and problem solving skills are finely honed in handmade wooden objects with more personal stories to tell. The fusion of functionality and play is central to my form language. I construct tall, sturdy silhouettes using smaller elements, resulting in functional objects that ignite people’s curiosity about the underlying narrative.

Working as a builder/carpenter, woodturning was a craft I knew very little about before 2001. I had done some research and found a woodturner in my nearest town. Lucky for me, this woodturner was one of the finest turners in Ireland. Willie Stedmond, one of the founding members of the Irish Woodturners Guild, was giving night classes to which I attended a few. It is always my first advice to anyone interested in woodturning, get some lessons and join a club. I also did the latter and met some great people who helped and encouraged me along the way.

Barbara received a BS degree in Nursing from the University of Tennessee in 1968.  Her career took her to Europe and to East Africa in the early 70’s and her photographs were her souvenirs.  She received a Masters of Psychiatric Nursing from Boston University in 1980 and coordinated psychiatric aspects of emergency departments at Boston City ED and at Medical college of Virginia’s ED. Barbara’s first experience with carving wood was in 1988 at a carving class in Richmond, VA.

 Our passion is to create individual art pieces combining several different materials, techniques and disciplines. The materials we love using the most are metal and wood, we also use techniques such as pyrography, painting and drawing to create detailed and beautiful pieces.

Shaping each piece on the lathe is captivating for me, but whilst I hope my work attracts the eye, I wish for it’s personality to be what captures the heart.
