MtW: Mike Mahoney

Mike Mahoney has been a professional woodturner since 1994. His bowls are featured in galleries across the United States. Mike’s work is sought after by collectors all over the world. Mike is often requested to demonstrate and teach for woodturning clubs, craft schools, and symposia. He has traveled around the world to discuss and demonstrate his craft and is considered an authority in woodturning.

As you can imagine, Mike produces a lot of bowls and other turnings but he also produces enormous piles of wood shavings.

IRD Title: Natural Edge Bowl

Description: In this demonstration Pat will make a natural edge bowl. Maintaining an even wall thickness is an important part of this project. Pat will show how to keep the wall thickness correct with mechanical devices and the latest in technology!

Hi and thank you for visiting my little island in the sea of woodturning. My name is Greg Gallegos. I have always been artistically inclined since I was very young. It wasn't until high school that I first was introduced to the wood lathe. After school I focused more on print media- drawing and painting. Fast forward to 2000 and I decided to throw myself into woodturning. I took a good five or six years of continual practice and self apprenticeship to be comfortable enough to actually start thinking of selling my work.

Description: In this demonstration Pat will make a Platter. Empasis will be on excentuating the rim with colured beads. Pat will demonstrate how to achieve clean transitions between the beads and the natural wood.

 I am a Woodturner who currently resides in Windsor, Ontario Canada.  I do a variety of forms of woodturning – a lot of commercial work, as much creative work as possible, and I teach all levels of students.  I have skills in other art forms, such as painting and carving, which I try to bring into my work and which naturally seem to influence my pieces.

Sparked by stories, that’s where I start. An intriguing design commission, working together with fellow makers or just by looking closely at the world around. Being an art director for many years I told big stories through design. Now, as a product designer and maker, the same aesthetic and problem solving skills are finely honed in handmade wooden objects with more personal stories to tell. The fusion of functionality and play is central to my form language. I construct tall, sturdy silhouettes using smaller elements, resulting in functional objects that ignite people’s curiosity about the underlying narrative.

‘Product designer Marisa Klaster’s monolithic wooden sculptures, on the other hand, are functional objects built by stacking smaller components one over the other. The fusion of function and play in Klaster’s works urges the viewer’s curiosity.’
